This virtual conference will focus on reducing restrictive interventions in line with national guidance and the Care Quality Commission Progress Report on Restraint, Segregation and Seclusion review. The conference will also update delegates on practical steps to reduce restrictive practice, implement the CQC recommendations, and bring you up to date on legal developments including the Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Act.

Nobody wants to receive care or work on a ward with high levels of restrictive practice, they are stressful and unpleasant places for everyone to be.

Dr Helen Smith, Consultant psychiatrist and Clinical Advisor to the mental health safety improvement programme NHS England March 2023

Issues around workforce retention and staffing shortages remain the greatest challenge for the mental health sector…Understaffing can affect the safety of patients and staff, with a lack of therapeutic interventions leading to an increased risk of violence and aggression on the wards… We have also seen the effect of staffing shortages on services’ ability to follow least restrictive practices.

Care Quality Commission 2022

Restrictive interventions are often a major contribution to delaying recovery, and have been linked with causing serious trauma, both physical and psychological, to people who use services and to staff…A number of recent studies have shown that it is possible to achieve significant reductions in the use of restrictive interventions.
