This conference focuses on improving the management and outcomes of people with co-occurring mental health and substance misuse conditions. The conference will provide a valuable insights, knowledge and a deeper understanding how services can be improved, and people can be supported towards improved recovery outcomes. The conference will cover learning from lived experiences and organisations that have improved services, challenging stigmatisation, early intervention and prevention, adherence to the NICE Quality Standard for Co-occuring severe mental health and substance misuse, effective assessment, assertive outreach and there will be specific case studies on supporting older people and people who are homeless.
The conference will also focus on implementing the recent NICE Update to Quality Standard Alcohol-use disorders: Diagnosis and Management which was published in July 2023.
“It is very common for people to experience problems with their mental health and alcohol/drug use (co-occurring conditions) at the same time. Research shows that mental health problems are experienced by the majority of drug (70%) and alcohol (86%) of alcohol users in community substance misuse treatment. Death by suicide is also common, with a history of alcohol or drug use being recorded in 54% of all suicides in people experiencing mental health problems.”
“People who have severe mental illness and substance misuse have significantly poorer outcomes than people who have either severe mental illness or substance misuse alone.”
