On the 8th June 2023, NHS England announced its first equality improvement plans that are aimed at boosting patient experience and supporting staff.
The first NHS Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Improvement Plan intends to "enhance the sense of belonging for NHS staff to improve their experience." The six actions set out in the plan are aimed at increasing workforce and financial performance.
“The diversity of the NHS workforce is one of its greatest strengths, and the evidence shows that ensuring our staff work in an environment where they feel they belong, and can safely raise concerns, ask questions and admit mistakes, is essential for staff morale – which, in turn, leads to improved patient outcomes. “So, today’s plan will build on progress made in recent years and target action to ensure the NHS fully supports and benefits from its diverse workforce – attracting talent, retaining skilled staff, ensuring greater diversity in leadership roles, and supporting colleagues to deliver the best possible service for our patients.”
Every trust will also be asked to set internal targets by March 2024 to reduce bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence, and to roll out measures to improve staff experience and progression through mentoring and other opportunities for staff.
The forthcoming Effective Nursing Retention conference will support you to improve retention in your service and develop and implement an effective nursing retention strategy.
