Non Medical Prescribing in Paediatrics & Child Health

 

News and presentations from today's conference, hearing about national updates and practical case studies. The conference will focus on how to develop and maintain prescribing competence. The conference will look at current issues and challenges for non medical prescribers in paediatrics and child health.

Claire spoke about the current issues and challenges of prescribing for children. 

Claire opened by talking about decision making, Claire said "Decision making in children is really complex". "If we force decisions on children, we are impacting their development", "We need to think about how we can empower children to make informed decisions". "We need to take positive steps to get positive outcomes"

On prescribing Claire said "Make sure you are checking what your patients are taking - do second checking, please make sure you are thinking about error avoidance". 

Claire continued by discussing Yellow cards - "If you think it, report it". "The more data we collect the more informed our decisions will be" "There is now a yellow card app you can download".

Claire brought her talk to a close by saying "Make sure you are auditing and up to date with your prescribing practice, a useful website is www.medicinesforchildren.org.uk - use the tools that are out there for you".

Helen talked about Paramedics and independent prescribing in an out of hospital environment. 

Helen said " Since 2018 Paramedics who have successfully completed their HCPC registration annotated to record their ability as a prescriber" "This means that paramedics are able to prescribe medicines to their patients immediately without the need to see a GP"

Whilst discussing managing paediatric pain Nathan said "Think about what else you can do to help apart from prescribing". "Sometimes overuse of ibuprofen and paracetamol can be the cause of headaches" "One to one CBT sessions can be very effective"
