Developing the role of Patient Safety Partners

Amarjit Kaur Head of Patient Experience and Involvement
Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust

• enabling patients to be partners in their own safety
• developing the role of Patient Safety Partners
• why is patient involvement key to patient safety?

Amarjit said the spectrum of patient engagement is: listen, ask, involve, co-produce.  She stated the benefits of patient involvement include: improved quality and safety of services for patients, supported recovery by enabling patients to make a positive contribution, innovation and creativity, and it can help avoid conflict. She said she finds one of the concerns of staff is that they are disinclined to involve patients when they are not listened to themselves, however it is to their benefit as they can get patients to advocate for them - quite often patients will be wanting the same thing. Amarjit said it's important to engage patients in a meaningful way and for Patient Safety Partners you need to consider: complexity, payment, staff support and recruitment.  Guidance does say those on committees etc should receive some kind of payment which recognises the commitment required and may help attract a wider scope of patient partners but you do have to consider other patient volunteers.
